This true to life solid bronze sculpture of an African rhinoceros was created by Professor Laurence Chait, a world renowned plastic surgeon, philanthropist, conservationist and sculpture. The rhinoceros is one of the series in the Big Five Safari Collection representing the most desired safari animals to view. The lion and the elephant are available on . SCULPTURE CAREER OF PROFESSOR LAURENCE CHAIT:In addition to his work as an accomplished plastic surgeon, Professor Chait is a well-known sculptor. He became interested in sculpting at a very early age but began taking it seriously from the age of 23. His main influences have been from the sculptures of the cycladic culture and the tribal art of Africa. Sculptors such as Brancusi, Hepworth, Lipshitz, Moore and South African Artists Khumalo, Legae and Borborecki have also played a significant influence in his development.
EXHIBITIONS:His first one man exhibition was held at the Lidchi Art Gallery in 1975. He had further exhibitions at the Trevor Coleman Gallery in 1978 and 1981, the Natalie Knight Gallery in Hyde Park in 1990, 1992 and 1993. The Crake Gallery in Norwood in 1987, 1996, 1999 and the most recent in 2004. He has been involved in numerous group exhibitions over the years. The sculptures in these exhibitions were abstracts and realistic pieces involving animal and human forms and were undertaken in wood, stone and bronze. Today he is working almost exclusively in bronze.
PUBLIC COMMISSIONS:- The University of Witwatersrand Medical School — Bust of Professor D J Du Plessis in 1977 followed by a bust of Professor JJ Orenstein, Professor Craib, Dr & Mrs Adler and Professor J A Myburgh. These are housed at the University of Witwatersrand Medical School and the History of Medicine Museum in Johannesburg.- 1992 Bust of Sir Herbert Baker commissioned by Parktown Heritage Foundation. One copy based at Northwoods in Parktown, the second at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.- 1993 \"Buffalo\" Inyati Game Reserve — Sabi Sands.- 1993 Sculpture of Jock of the Bushveld placed in grounds of the Johannesburg Hospital, the site of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick\'s house at Hohenheim. Recently moved to the Johannesburg Zoo.- 1992 Sculpture for Paediatric Unit, Red Cross Hospital — Cape Town.- 1995 Sculpture for Burns Unit, Baragwanath Hospital — Soweto.- 2000 Memorial Sculpture for Internal Reconciliation at Wits Medical School.- 2006 Bust of Prof Tobias — Sterkfontein Caves (Cradle of Man Kind which is a world heritage site) in South Africa.- 2007 One and a half-life size sculpture of a gorilla for the Johannesburg Zoo (Max).- 2013 Bust of Nelson Mandela titled 1994, commemorating the year he was elected President of South Africa in the country’s first free democratic elections. PHILANTHROPY:Although he still has anactive private medical practice, Prof Chait\'s work today as leader of the Netcare Vodacom Smilesfor You Program offers him the most satisfaction.

The Smiles for you program isa joint initiative funded by Netcare, (a hospital group) and the VodacomFoundation. The program repairs the cleft lip and palates of disadvantaged children bornwith these deformities. Patients are treated at no cost by the specialists. The program performs as many as 80 procedures per year

Prof. Chait\'s other passion is conservation. He cares intensely about preserving the Africa\'s vast heritage of wildlife and owns a private game farm that is populated with many of the animal species indigenous to the area. It is here that he finds the inspiration for his artistic endeavors.
