  • Offered for sale is an early stereoview Published by C. L. Marston, No. 3 Bowman\'s block, Kenduskeag Bridge, Bangor, Maine. The stereoview is titled as follows in old handwitting --

    LOVERS LEAP - KENDUSKEAG STREAM - VICINITY BANGOR, MAINE - A handwritten date of May 7th, 1871 is also written on the back as photo shows.

    Located about a mile from downtown on the Kenduskeag Stream, Bangor\'s Lover\'s Leap, like many other similarly named promintories across the country, commemorates a young Native American couple who supposedly jumped to thear deaths in the stream after being refused permission to wed. A lengthy poem written by one H.G.R. for \'The Velocopede\' in 1869 describes, with a stiff helping of poetic license, \"...a tale about this stern old cliff--/A tale of days gone by, of live, and hate,a dn daring--/Passions that smoulder in the savage breast, /With tenfold vigor, unrestrained by fear/ Of social sneer, or educated scorn...\" This information came from the Maine Memory Network. Maine Historical the stereoview exhibits corner ware and minor soiling as photo shows.
