WRITTEN IN OR AROUND THE SECOND HALF OF THE 11TH CENTURY (1050AD)!
Exceedingly rare miniature painting of a bird, from a manuscript fragment originating from Italy, second half of the 11th century or possibly earlier (manuscripts from the 12th Century look completely different). Amazing vellum illuminated manuscript fragment features clean an clear early Carolingian miniscule; displaying a progression of older to newer scripts in heirarchical order (uncials followed by Carolingian miniscule), highlighted with the miniature. The bird is simply beautiful- clean and clear with red and blue detailing in the wings, head and feet, with the text clearly applied around the art upon its formation. Marginal and decorated initial paintings of birds are found often in medieval manuscripts, but usually not this early. A quite similar bird can be referenced in the Gospel MS. Auct. D. 2. 16 from the 9th. Century, held in the Oxford, Bodleian Library [Page (Folio): 102r, initial letter with bird and man head], viewing is available online). Measures 4 5/8\" x 1 1/2\", or 11.8 x 4.2cm. In absolutely stunning shape, as shown. As found, in matted frame with small corner tape mounts; very loose and nothing that even remotely risks or damages the piece. Guaranteed authentic. Good
