You are offerding on a striking and very rare vellum illuminated manuscript/woodcut leaf
from a Book of Hours,
highlighted with a beautifully illuminated and gold burnished full page miniature
consisting of a colorful hand painted scene
of the
FlagELLATION OF CHRIST,
Probably printed in Paris, France
by Gilles Hardouyn,
circa 1510 or so!
Miniature painting / full page contour woodcut design of the Raising of Lazarus, magnificently executed and colored richly in gold burnishment and various colored tints. The verso contains an additional 5 initials burnished in colors and gold as well as a margin ornamental border highlighted by an illuminated golden setting, fruit additions (cherries), Akanthus and other flowers. A truly rare and beautiful piece. This vellum leaf is a prime document from the transitional phase between manuscript making and the beginning of book printing. Text and book decorations were made in style of a manuscript, the miniatures and the initials were hand-painted in classic style. Even though the Parisian masters showed a certain openness towards the new medium print, they were not able to defend their supremacy in Europe. Editions grew fast in the early days of book printing and soon it was impossible to execute book illustrations solely by hand. As shown with some lighter age rubbing and some color bleeding/ toning on it as well as the borders. Page is slightly tanned but overall bright; overall great shape. Measures 7\" x 5\". Pics taken with and without flash for demonstration of gold sheen, page is not yellowed. Good luck!
