A legendary work of Pennsylvania German folk magic and remedies. This work (probably based on earlier works of folk magic in the European tradition such as the various works attributed to Albertus Magnus), was reprinted many times and became closely associated with the Pennsylvania Dutch magic tradition known as Braucherei. Often referred to as the \"pow- wow book\" in translation (indeed, still in print today), it is a work of broad appeal, as so many of the spells, recipes and remedies are universally applicable to rural concerns, especially those pertaining to both human and animal health. The supposedly occult powers of the book figure in works of fiction as well. Originally issued in German in 1820, this is a later edition of this mysterious work which also includes many folk remedies, charms and spells for colic, aches, swellings, etc. A few spells are included to be used against thieving, murderers and witchcraft, as well as extinguishing fire without water, earning the book the status of grimoire. Hohman was a German immigrant, settling in Pennsylvania in 1802, and earning money by publishing various broadsides and other work, as well as practicing as a mystic and a folk healer.Bound in well rounded and worn cloth covered hardcovers with fabric spine, with much missing, as shown. The pages within exhibit some browning/ staining and wear, along with some detachments, but overall all pages present. Unmarked. 110pp. Extremely rare! Good luck!
