Thislisting is fora 19th century silver gilt and hand painted Russian icon of a saint. The icon is oval in shape and measures 5 inches high to the top of the loop and is 3 ½ inches or 12.5 by 9 cm. The icon comes with a fitted wood case lined with magenta velvet.
The icon features a male saint holding a book in his left hand and his other hand is raised making the sign of the cross. The hand painted portrait is done with excellent attention to detail, the silver work around the portrait is very detailed with precise engraved work. It is marked on the front lower left of the icon with the combined city standard mark for Moscow along with a makers mark. The silver has been tested and is guaranteed to be so. There is a small loop at the top for hanging.
The icon is in very good condition for its age, with craquelure to the paint and variations to the gilt patina on the silver. The velvet on the interior of the case is quite worn and the box does not close all the way anymore.
