A master storyteller who recounted his experiences in a voice tone-colored to every emotion. Crawford was one of America\'s most popular performers in the late 19th century. He began as Buffalo Bill Cody\'s costar, and together the re-enacted incidents drawn from their experiences as scouts with the army sent against the Sioux after the Little Big Horn battle.Soon, though Crawford struck out on his own and, dressed in buckskin with a wide-brimmed sombrero covering his flowing locks, he delivered a \"frontier monologue and medley\" that, as one New York City journalist reported, \"held his audience spell-bound for two hours by a simple narration of his life.\" Crawford tried to present the West as he experienced it.
