The Iowa Soldiers’ Home

Among the leading features of Marshalltown is the Iowa Soldiers Home, erected by the state for the benefit of deserving veterans. The law providingfor the erection and maintenance of this institution was passed in 1886. Thecities competing for the location were Council Bluffs, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque,Sioux City, Burlington, and Marshalltown. Marshalltown donated a tract of land of onehundred and twenty eight acres, and a bonus of $12,000 to secure the location. The sum of $100,000 was appropriated for the purpose of construction andmaintenance during 1887. The grounds were put in shape and the beautifulstructure reared. It is located on an eminence overlooking the city and easilyaccessible by electric street cars. The grounds have been tastefully laid outand ornamented, and the institution speaks eloquently of the excellent care andattention given it by its management .The first commander of the Home wasColonel Milo P Smith of Clinton. The Home was established as the result of theefforts of the GAR

Mrs. M. A. Read, was the matron of the hone. In her girlhood she went from Ohio to Florida. In 1873, she married the late Colonel Read who was on the staff of Union GeneralThomas. Mrs Read has charge of theWoman\'s Dormitory, which is the most handsomely finished and furnished of theHome buildings. It accommodates forty indigent widows and mothers of soldierswho may find, under the kind care of Matron Read, an inviting haven of rest fortheir declining years. The Woman’s Dormitory was not opened until January 1st,1895 and initially housed but two inmates.

The commendable aim and purpose of the management is to make theinstitution a veritable home for the old veterans, who will, for the next fiveto eight years, more and more, tax its resources. The trustees in 1895 wereCapt. C. L. Davidson, Hull; Capt. S. B. Evans, Ottumwa; Capt. J. J. Russell,Jefferson; Capt. N. A. Merrill, Dewitt; Doctor Burchard, Marshalltown; and JohnW. Morton Washington.
