$599.00

This is a pocket diary dated 1862, author, Jacob Strouss of the 5th PA regiment volunteers company H. This diary has no binding, spine, most pages loose. I have not looked at this diary for a while as I have had it displayed. Highlights are: Camp near Sharpsburg. Received by the President and Mcclellan 4 O\'clock in the afternoon before the \"railsplitter\" made his appearance.\" Sent one dollar note, confederate, Richmond money of Antietam picked up on that bloody battlefield\". There are approximately 11 pages written and then supplies, who owes money, breakdown of supplies, talks of X-Mas and eating only hardtack. I also have an 1863 diary from this same soldier listed, so please take a look. Feel free to ask questions.

This is a civil war, antique, 1863 diary written by Jacob Strouss of the 5th PA Volunteers CO A. This diary is in better condition than my other diary. The binding is still holding. There is writing in this diary from 1/1/83 until Tues 5/5/63. After this, breakdown of soldiers who owe money and totals. I believe this soldier was ill with diarrhea and he sporadically wrote thereafter. Oct 2, left Philadelphia for home. Sporaditic writing of life at home. The bulk of the diary is: guard duty, weather, 1/20 went to ambulance, 1/24 roof on shanty, 2/2 making corduroy roads, Feb 15: friend arrested for selling candles, Feb 20th: bought a stove, March 28: 24th birthday, apr 30, soldier comes home after being prisoner at Friedricksburg, apr 6, snowball fight, Apr 20: came to Washington to cover Capital Hill. Apr 30th: news of mustered for Mon, May 4, 800 rebel prisoners (from Chancellorsville)? Fri May 8-June 1 left Washington and want to ____Hill. June 5, going to hospital. June 25, arrived at hospital. June 30 mustered for fray, Note: Wed May 6: Jacob did not write for two months, most probably because of fray, diarrhea. Oct 2, 1863 left for home.
