1865 J. Coss Photograph
\"I survived the War Between the States\"
Revenue Stamp verifies authenticity.
Pencil dated April 1865.
- -

This 1865 photograph is surely authentic. It\'s nearly 150 years old.Touch a splendid piece of American history.There\'s nothing \"mint\" about this -- it\'s grungy, beautiful history.

The great thing about this is that
you can touch it without worrying
about losing value. On the reverse we read
Photographed by J. Coss,
Main Street, over the State Bank,
Springfield, Ohio
Apr. 1865
I never knew who
this gentleman was.
I liked this for the R18
\"PROPRIETARY STAMP ON COVER.\"Those who know about these
Proprietary Stamps, know
that they basically paid a
tax for photographs at that
time.The \"cover\" is the finished
photo behind the canceled stamp.
The R18 was only used
from 1862 to 1872.The stamp authenticates the item.Nobody would ever go to so much
trouble to fake this stamp to
fake the photo (that isn\'t really
that rare).Because there were many thousands
of these photographs, there are
still many of these stamps (used).
The photo might have been
held by LINCOLN in 1865.

You can\'t think that a Lincoln connection is likely, but thepoint is, it\'s not impossible.Lincoln was assassinated on the 14th of April 1865.

It\'s more likely that this photo was touched by peoplewho shook Linciln\'s hand (or viewed the funeral train).

If you like long shots, it\'s also possible that the R18here is Scott\'s variety \"e. Printed on both sides.\" If it is,it might be worth thousands of dollars. Realistically, if it wereprinted on both sides, I think you could see that from the obverse.Take closer looks if you wish: Im1, Im2, Im3, Im4, Im5, and Im6.

It\'s also possible that the R18 is on silk paper. That\'s another rarevariation. The poor condition of the stamp probably makes that anunnecessary concern. At this point the whole piece only works together. It is probably wise not to separate the stamp from the photograph.
