CIVIL WAR SOLDIER’S LETTER BATTLE OFDRANESVILLE 4TH REGIMENT PENN. VOL. PVT CHARLES CARR

The letter, dated February 2, 1862 was written from Camp Pierpont, Va.and mentions the Battle of Dranesville which occurred on December 20, 1861. TheConfederate soldiers were led by General J.E.B. Stuart and the Union soldiersby General Edward Ord.

“Camp Pierpont, V.A.

February 2nd,1862

Friend samuel,

I take the pleasure to right to you a few lines to let you knowthat I am well and hope that these few lines find you the same. The weatherdown hear is very bad we ant (ain’t) had a clear day for three weeks and it isgot it very muddy. The mud is easy a foot and a half deep and you ant to se(see) the men know if the ant a pitcher of mud hogs you ever saw. Our camp isLeesburg turn pick about seven miles from Washington. On the Virginia side ofthe Potomack it is the greatest piece of country you ever saw. Shore but woodsand mountains and the houses is about five miles apart and we don’t se a girlfrom on months end to the other. Sam I like solgern duty. We have been in onebattle since I has been in the survis and that was in the Battle OfDranesville. We case 7 killed and 63 wounded. The rebels lose 150 killed andover 200 wounded. We drove them from the field. Thay left Everything behind wegot ca-s And knapsacks and a grate many other things witch fell into ourposestion. We hade a grand revela A weekbefore last in Halls Hill of our Division for to Receve our Flags withthe name Dransvill on them in oner of the victory we had there in December.Last Sam as soon as the rods gets drys the Hole army is again to move ofterdsRichmond to make the Strick for Freedom and the constution and the old Flag thestars and Strips and we hope that she will wave over this Union undividedbefore long. I entended to drop my last blood for the Countrys cause and I willstand by the old Flage as long as I live. So wen you right derecket your letterto Camp Pierpont Virginia in care of Captain Besseleive 4 Regement PRV corpsCol. Magilton so I know more at preasent but right as soon as you receve this.

Private Carr, as part of the 4th Penn.Reserve Volunteers, was mustered in at Harrisburg in June, 1861, to serve forthree years. The 4th was mustered out in 1862 to become part of the 2ndBrigade, 33rd Regiment. Beside the Battle of Dranesville, the 4th(then 2nd) was very active in the war: present at Mechanicsville;engaged at Gaines\' mill ; participated in a fierce bayonet fight at Glendale,in which it was able to withstand the opposing force, though it suffered severelosses; was active at the second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam andFredericksburg.

The letter measures 8” x 9 ½” opened, isfolded in half then in 3 to fit into an envelope. It is lightly stained, someyellowing, foxing on the blank back page, some splitting of the seams but theink is strong and the writing legible. There is no envelope. Please see thephotos.
