CIVIL WAR LETTER LOT
1864-65
A fine early vintageand genuine group of three letters to a wife of a soldier who was once a prisoner of war, released and went into the hospital and died. The letters give her the sad news and a bit of news about him and how he died knowing he was aChristian man and would see his glory in heaven...they were trying to comfort her with these letters.
One letter nearly two pages dated Naval School Hospital, Annapolis, Md Jan 6, 1865 was written by Charlotte W. Ford. ~~~Research shows she was a well known nurse studying to be a doctor., and was a doctor a few years after the war ended..she lived a long age as a female doctor. She died of heart disease at her home Jan 12, 1915. She was a graduate of Smith College at Northampton, Ma.
The soldier was Horace Varney, 1st DC Cavalry, records showing he died at Salisbury, N.C. as a POW, [ note, our letters correct this error in the record ]. Another letter by Paul Vander Voort, was with the 16th Ill. Vols and was a POW with this fellow. He volunteered as a private and rose in rank to Sergt prior to his capture. He also went to Andersonville. He writes a nice letter to the wife stating he was with her husband as a POW and talks of him nicely to her. The woman doctor says she is sending his meager belongings in hopes that they arrive safely and she will take some comfort from having what he had on him when he died.
Three truly fine letters with no defects, easy to read and comes with a good amount of research.
