Julian Chisolm, the foremost surgeon in the Confederacy, wrote A Manual of Military Surgery for Use of Surgeons in the Confederate Army to aid in the treatment and conduct of surgical procedures during the Civil War by other Confederate surgeons.  In this great book Dr. Chisolm details the surgical procedures used during the Civil War and also incorporates treatment of other medical aspects as well. Additionally he has incorporated chapters dealing with food, clothing and hygiene of troops; with directions on how the health of the army is to be preserved; how an effective strength is to be sustained; and on the duties of military surgeon both in the camp and in the field.  Dr. Chisolm (1830-1903) was a surgeon and oculist. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, he received his medical degree from the Medical College of South Carolina in 1850 and continued his studies in London, Milan and Paris. During the Crimean War, Chisolm studied treatment techniques in European military hospitals. At the outbreak of the American Civil War, he received the first Confederate Military Commission issued to a medical officer and attended the wounded at Fort Sumter. His Manual of Military Surgery (1861) was presented to the surgeon-general while the Battle of Manassas was fought.  In addition to his extraordinary service to the Confederacy, Dr. Chisolm holds the distinction of having treated Helen Keller\'s in 1886, confirming that she would never see or hear, but being convinced, despite conventional wisdom at the time, that she could be educated and thus referring her to Alexander Graham Bell who secured teaching services for her. An extraordinary and heavily-relied upon medical book during the Civil War. THIS BOOK IS IN MINT CONDITION This handsome, historically-significant book is in new, unread, and in pristine condition. Handsomely bound in black covers with impressed, gold-gilded lettering on the spine and the color image of three Confederate Flags on the cover, the exterior is clean, sharp, solid and colorful. The image and lettering remain bright and sharp. The interior is solidly bound throughout with no looseness or lean. The pages are bright white and don\'t have a mark on them. There are no smudging or writing in the book. The book contains numerous illustrations of medical procedures as well as medical-related issues. A mint, new book. OUT-OF-PRINT - NO LONGER AVAILABLE FROM THE PUBLISHER   Be sure to add me to your favorites list!  Sign up for my email newsletters by adding my store to your Favorites ENJOY THE BOOKSHOP
