CIVIL WAR PHOTO AMBROTYPE ARMED SOLDIER UNION ARMY:
$1848.59

Nice 6th plate Ambrotype image of a United States Civil War Union infantry soldier with rifle and knife. \"US\" belt buckle and \"E1\" cap in image is very clear. Handsome, armed soldier in a very fine Union uniform.
There are some issues with the bottom of the image under the last visible uniform button and on along the right elbow. These areas look worn away and when you look closely you can see the dark backing with white fibers under the glass. Only half the case has survived the years. Back embossing is in nice shape. Tin protection on front edge has lifted around the edges a bit. Edges, back, of case show wear. Otherwise this is a fantastic image. Ambrotypes are very rare and those images of soldiers with weapons, rarer still.

We were able to safely remove the photo and what a surprise. There is a locket of hair and a note that looks to say \"Preserved to Wife Celia Maloney By Corp. Robt. W. York of Co. E. 1st Reg. Oct. 25th AD 1861\"
Please see the additional photos. Happy offerding!

Sorry that should have said \"Presented to Wife.....\"

Further research shows that Corp. Robt. W. York was from the 1st Wisconsin Regiment (can also slightly make out \"Wi\" in the writing after the words \"1st Reg\". Entered the war as a Corporal and left as aSergeant according to some Civil War records we found online.

A question was just received from an interested member and we have attempted to answer. Another picture has been added to the listing to elaborate:
Question:
Hello. Thanks for listing the sixth-plate ambrotype. It looks like a fine image but I do have a question if you don\'t mind. Let\'s see if I can phrase it so it makes sense. Here goes... Since the image appears \"corrected\" (rather than laterally reversed), this means this is a clear glass ambrotype (rather than a ruby glass ambrotype) with the emulsion (image) side facing inside of the case rather than outward at us. My question is... Is there a separate dark-colored \"backer\" behind the glass ambrotype plate to provide the needed contrast or has the backside of the ambrotype plate (which bears the actual image emulsion) been painted over? I\'m guessing it has a separate dark backer (either fabric or a piece of sheet metal) but thought I\'d ask before offerding. Thank you for your time and patience.
Our Answer:
Hi. Thank you for your question. Please bear in mind that we are no experts in photography or antique civil war photographic technology. I will answer your question as I understand it and try to post an additional photo of the image to hopefully better explain it. It does appear that the image is \"reversed\" as you as you stated in your question. It appears to be clear glass. As stated in the sale description, some of the image appears to be worn away starting from the last visible uniform button downward and also on the right (viewer perspective) elbow. Underneath these areas you can see a dark background with tiny white fibers, almost looks like some sort of fabric but can\'t be sure. The image has an almost 3D effect when you look at it from an angle. When we acquired the image we did not see these defects as the image looks very nice when viewing it from a normal viewing distance. Only after looking up close under a magnifying lamp, did we see the image defects. The picture we will try to add to the listing was taken under magnification to try and show what we are trying to explain. Please let us know if you have any further questions. Thank you.
Some more interesting information about the soldier in the photo: After the war,Robert W.Yorkeventually became Captain Engine Company Number 5Minneapolis Fire Department.

Correction - the image is not reversed as clearly seen by the \"US\" on the belt buckle and the \"E1\" on the cap. Sorry for the confusion.
