CIVILWAR SHIP’S COVER & LETTER, UNION BLOCKADE to Sarah Crane, Berkely,Massachusetts 1861 Thiswriter of the letter, C.J. Crane, mentions 2 Union Civil War ships, The USSConnecticut and the USS Preble. He also mentions, among other things, life onthe ship from a sailor’s perspective and waiting to be resupplied by theConnecticut which at this point in the war was delivering men and supplies tothe Union ships blockading the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The USS Preble wasmentioned by Crane when he wrote”, we have hoisted our numbers and they haveanswered it and it is the Preble, a sloop of war come to lay by us…”. At thispoint of the war the Preble was engaged with the Gulf Blockading Squadron. Theletter has some folds. The first part is written in pen and the second part inpencil which makes the reading of it difficult (please see photos). I’vetranslated the full letter which can be read in the last 2 photos (if you havedifficulty reading the translated copy, email me and I’ll send you a copy.)
