This Civil War SOLDIERS envelope without letter is marked DUE 3 and is franked by C. L. Allen 38th Mass Vol Regt. It is Postmarked New Orleans, LA and has a pre printed 38th Regiment Mass. Volunteers logo on it. Soldiers often did not have the opportunity to purchase stamps in the field so their letters had to be franked (signed) by an officer or Chaplin to allow the mail to be carried to the destination at which time the 3 cent postage was collected from recipient.
