CIVIL WAR ERA TINTYPE, ANIDENTIFIED UNION VETERAN AND HIS YOUNG FAMILY,
DAVID FAY & HULDAH WHITE FAY, ANDTHEIR CHILDREN, 1865.

Thesubjects are identified, and dated “1865?” in early ink holograph on paperlabel affixed to verso. [No Photographer], likely from Cazenovia, NY area, fromthe estate of the Roderick & Lucy Blakeslee White family [for a short entryon David & Hilda Fay, please see page 23 of White’s, ‘Memorials of RoderickWhite and his Wife Lucy Blakeslee of Paris Hill, NY 1632-1892’].

Thefather, David Henry Fay (1841-1928) was born in 1841 at Cazanovia, New York. In1861 he enlisted in the Union Army, in Company G, 81st Regiment of the New YorkInfantry, from Oct. 9, 1862, and fought until he was wounded at the Battle ofFair Oaks on May 31, 1862, and discharged at Yorktown, VA., September, 1862(after contracting typhoid fever). He kept a diary of his Civil War service,which is held by the Huntington Library.

Thisphotograph is part of a large family archive of early daguerreotypes, ambrotypes,and tintypes of the Roderick & Lucy Blakeslee White family, and theirchildren and extended family. Many are identified and dated, from the 1840s,1850s and 1860s. Many are from the Cazenovia, New York and Oneida County area. Wejust acquired the archive, and will be offering the photographs over the nextfew weeks.
