Eduard Kuznetsov had been imprisoned since 1970 as one often men and one woman captured while attempting to commandeer an empty plane inLeningrad in order to flee the country. Tried in Leningrad, they were allsentenced to prison. Two of the prisoners, Kuznetsov and Mark Dymshitz, werecondemned to die.

Kuznetsov and Dymshitz were freed in 1979 and allowed toleave Russia in exchange for two Soviet spies held in the United States. Fiveothers were pardoned that year as part of a “public relations” deal coinciding witha visit to Russia by a delegation of US Congressmen.
