Synopsis

Comus is a masque in honour of chastity, written by John Milton. The plot concerns two brothers and their sister, called the Lady, lost in a journey though the woods. The Lady becomes fatigued, and the brothers wander off in search of sustenance. While alone, she encounters Comus, a character inspired by the god of mockery, who claims he will lead her to her brothers. Deceived by his amiable countenance, the Lady follows him, only to be captured, brought to his palace and paralized by his magic. Immobilized, and Comus offers a vessel with a drink (representing pleasure and intemperance) that would overpower her, but she refuses, arguing for the virtuousness of temperance and chastity.Despite being restrained, she continues to exercise reason, thereby manifesting her freedom of mind. Meanwhile her brothers, searching for her, come across the Attendant Spirit, an angelic figure sent to aid them, who takes tells them how to defeat Comus. Together they chase off Comus, though Lady remains magically bound to her chair. With a song, the Spirit conjures a water nymph who frees the Lady on account of her steadfast virtue. She and her brothers are reunited with their parents in a triumphal celebration, which signifies the heavenly bliss awaiting the soul that prevails over temptations.

---------- About the Illustrator/Author----------

Arthur Rackham (1867 – 1939) was a prolific English book illustrator. He was born in London as one of 12 children. At the age of 18, he worked as a clerk at the Westminster Fire Office and began studying at the Lambeth School of Art. In 1892, he quit his job and started working for The Westminster Budget as a reporter and illustrator. His works were included in numerous exhibitions, including one at the Louvre in Paris in 1914. While he may be best known for his elaborate illustrations of children\'s literature and fairy tales, he also illustrated books for adult readers, including A Midsummer Night\'s Dream (1908) and Undine.

John Milton (1608– 1674) was an English poet, author, polemicist and civil servant for the Commonwealth of England. He is best known for his epic poem Paradise Lost. He was a scholarly man of letters, a polemical writer, and an official serving under Oliver Cromwell. Milton is believed to have been a Calvinist and the question of predestination and freedom was crucial to his intellectual orientation. He wrote at a time of religious and political flux in England, and his poetry and prose reflect deep convictions, often reacting to contemporary circumstances such as his treatise condemning censorship, Areopagitica. As well as English, he wrote in Latin and Italian, and had an international reputation during his lifetime. He remains generally regarded \"as one of the preeminent writers in the English language and as a thinker of world importance.
