FANTASTIC, INCREDIBLE AND HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT HANDWRITTEN DIARY FROM THE CONNECTICUT Tobacco VALLEY TOWNS. JOURNAL IS FULL FOR THE YEAR 1880, AND SIGNED BY THE OWNER. This exceedingly interesting diary is chock full of history pertaining to several historical towns in the Connecticut valley and is signed by Anson R. Davis; Anson Riley Davis, who was born in Derby and lived in the village or hamlet of Birmingham. Anson was born in Derby on March 30, 1818 and died in Oxford [buried in Southford] on May 4, 1885, just five years after he completed this day-book. He was a hardworking family man who also found time to have fun with his wife and children, whom he refers to quite a bit, on the pages of this antique handwritten book. Davis was not only a farmer, but he was also quite the Tobacco grower, as he addresses \"planted Tobacco, we picked it, hung it to dry and stripped it. Sold 1,595 lbs of Tobacco to Mr. Hall, at West Haven, CT.\" Davis goes with his oxen and cart to Oxford, Sandy Hook, West Haven, Ansonia, Newton, Naugatuck, Squatuck, [Saugatuck], Southbury, New Haven, Derby, Woodmont, [Milford], etc., as he sells numerous goods and produce from his farm, and painstakingly records everything, down to the penny. He also knows and records the name of every customer from towns where he sells his items. Scarce Connecticut genealogy.Davis writes in his diary that on Nov 2, they went into town and voted for Garfield and Arthur for President and Vice President. He writes of going to the Oyster River and getting some clams; went to \"the Farms\", to church; had to go to Oxford to get his mail; Samuel Hawkins little child died last night; Davis paid for singing lessons; bought a book of English literature for his wife Mary; mentions his daughter and other friends quite a bit; trimmed the apple trees; planted sugar cane, peach stones, potatoes, etc. but his biggest crop by far was Tobacco. Davis had oxen and a cart and almost every Saturday he went to the center of \"Bir\" as he calls it [Birmingham], and sells eggs, and chickens, butter, apples, etc.; chops wood, brings in the hay; Millie Outman got married at the Episcopal church in Oxford; went to the funeral of Mrs. John R. Lewis who died at the age of 60 in Oxford; \"Thanksgiving, we all staid home.\" He bought something for Mary and Emma at Christmas time, yet worked on Christmas day. His attention to Tobacco entries covers quite a few pages. His friends and acquaintances include; Charlie Edmunds, John J. Coxhead, Frank Harold, Maureen Hawkins, Mr. Arnold and Mr. Clark, Mr. Burger, Mrs. Atwood, Mr. Mueler, and numerous others as he \"makes the rounds\" with his oxen, his cart, and his items for sale from his farm. He worked hard just about every day according to his entries in this journal, and he died at the age of 67.
