Wonderful, beautifully executed authentic vintage silver plated Cornish Pewter snuff/pill box from the famous manufacturers JAMES DIXON & SONS of Sheffield.James Dixon & Sons were one of the best known and finest Britannia Metal Pewter manufacturers in Britain, producing top quality work from their inception during the early 1800\'s.The oval box depicts excellently and clearly executed hare coursing scene showing a man and 3 hounds in front of some trees and shrubbery. The box\'s lid is hinged and slightly sticking out over the edges for ease of opening. All the sides of the box are decoratively indented.
The box is fully signed underneath with a trumpet mark in a cartouche as well as J & D & S all in separate cartouches, Made in England and the model number L 1456. Above it all there is an engraved sign resembling letter U.
According to the book \"James Dixon\" by Jack L. Scott the shape of the James Dixon signature on the box dates it to c. 1910.
The measurements are c. 2.36 in x 1.87 in x 0.59 in (6 cm x 4.75 cm x 1.5 cm).
Some years ago the box has been SILVER PLATED for me, and since then has been carefully stored.
It is in EXCELLENT VINTAGE condition with few signs of use.
Beautiful and very collectible box that would make a great and thoughtful Xmas present for a collector of James Dixon & Sons artefacts or best English pewter. Also, of course, for a devoted hunter!
