I am finally disposingof my collection of English sterling silver & Mother of Pearl pocket andfruit knives. Really don’t want to give them up, but they are going to helpfund another project. All items will be sold with and a low startingprice.

Offered withoutreserve and a very low starting price is a elegant antique sterlingsilver and Mother of Pearl gentleman’s pocket knife, very clearly hallmarkedfor Sheffield, England, 1854 by the renowned English silver smith John YeomansCowlishaw. Cowlishaw produced someof the finest pen knives and fruit knives in 19th Century England.\\

The knife measures 6 1/8 inches overall length when opened, with a blade length of approximately 2 3/4 inches. Length closed is 3 ½ inches.Weight is 31 grams or 1 1/8 ounces. The single edged blade is well stamped witha left facing Queen’s head; a Sheffield crown; the date letter “L” for 1854;the lion rampant; and the initials “JYC” in an oblong cartouche. The blade hasa ridged spine to facilitate opening and still opens in two stages. There ispositive detent at each stage, but no “snap” associated with modern knives.

The Mother of Pearl scales have a deep, aged luster and oneside has an un-engraved oblong silver cartouche for a monogram or name. Thebolsters are elegantly line engraved and appear to be of nickel silver. The linersare of yellow metal – I have not tested for gold. The spine of the knife hasbeen engraved with lines and cross-hatching. Please see the photos, which forma part of the description.

The condition is good, although there are some clear signsof use along the blade edge and towards the tip – which is not bent or snapped.Again – please see the photos and note that I have not tried to polish thesilver – if I had it would have photographed spectacularly well.

Finding 19th Century silver folding knives inthis condition is quite unusual. Good luck if you decide to offer.

Sorry about the statement here, but, as this is a knife, byofferding on the item you are acknowledging that you are over 18 years of age andin compliance with all local, state and federal laws and ordinances related tothe purchase and ownership of edged weapons.
