EARLY ANTIQUE TEKKE or SARIKTURKOMAN TENT BAND (Yolam), fragment, Central Asian tribal, Turkmenistan, circa 1800-1850, and coming invery goodoverall condition for the collector. The exact sizeis: 9.5\" x 4\'-2\" (24 x 127cm). A beautiful and very old Turkmen textile artifact for the collector. Varied totemic design motifs are pile woven on a finely spun natural ivory woolplain-weave ground. Note that the outermost side borderexhibits an embroidered zigzag design like that found on early published examples of this type in the rug book literature. On later examples, post-1850, the borders are executed in knotted pile. This rather rare old specimen is finely woven with a symmetric knot structure. The dyes are all natural and are derived from organic plant sources. The weaver created thislovely exampleusing onlywith four shades of red and four shades of blue withone areaof natural cotton for highlights (see close up photo 10).The overall pile condition of this yolam fragment is quite good consideringits early age (see photo 11), with only one small gouge on a side border from past ethnographic age use (see close up photos 4, 5, and 6). This textile has been hand washed and is now backed on fine linen.It is immediately ready for a collection or display.
