Description

This is a vintage Waterman\'s 52 1/2 Fountain Pen in Black Chased Hard Rubber (BCHR). This pen is in good condition, and comes with a #2 IDEAL 14K Solid Gold Flexy nib. The numbering system on Waterman\'s has changed a few times but is logical if you know what all of the numbers mean. Fortunately, there is good information on the internet on how to read the numbers. The \'5\' means that the pen has a Lever Filling System. The \'2\' refers to the nib size, and the \'1/2\' means that the pen is a Slender model. I\'m not sure of the exact manufacturing date of this pen, but if I had to make an educated guess, I\'ve seen this exact same pen listed on a pen web site dated 1919 and this one actually has \'1920\' tastefully engraved on one of the barrel bands - the other barrel band is engraved \'DJE\'. Suffice to say that it is at least 97 years old! Pen manufacturers were dropping BCHR in the 20\'s and migrating to the new Celluloid plastic, but some of Waterman\'s BCHR pens were selling so well, that Waterman didn\'t change them to the new plastic right away. The \'52\' for example, was so popular and was a top seller so Waterman continued producing it out of BCHR while also starting to manufacture it out of Celluloid (a plastic developed by E. I. DuPont) that many other pen manufacturers were also using. Waterman had switched to Celluloid entirely by the early 1930\'s.

The barrel has the usual minor micro wear scratches, but no gouges, dents or cracks - most of the chasing has worn off. The barrel has faded some but this is quite common with the old BCHR pens, so I left it alone. The cap has faded as well - it has that greenish color to it - typical. The cap is cracked, but I didn\'t attempt to repair it - not my specialty. The chasing pattern is more pronounced on the cap - much crisper than the barrel. The cap clip is missing. The cap bands on this pen are drop dead gorgeous! They are right at 1/4\" in length, and have worn quite well - no visible brassing. My guess is that the cap bands are Gold-Filled and there is no visible brassing at all, on the bands or the filling lever. This is one stunning pen with legible but worn barrel imprints.

The 14K Solid Gold Ideal #2 Flexy nib looks excellent visually. Waterman had a reputation for making excellent nibs of varying line widths and flex (generally more flexy nibs than stiff ones). I\'d judge line width to be about an \'EF\' to a \'BB\' depending on writing pressure - an absolutely stunning nib and a very smooth writer! The imprint on the nib is \'WATERMAN\'s IDEAL REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.  2\'. I\'m a bit heavy handed when writing with a fountain pen.

On the end of the barrel is that number code I described earlier - \'52 1/2\'. There is also a \'W\' imprinted on the end of the barrel, but the font looks like the \'W\' that would be used to spell \'Waterman\'. I also installed a new ink sac and cleaned the pen components thoroughly ultrasonically and finished it off with a hand polish The filling lever operates nice and smoothly. It is in superb condition! This Waterman\'s fountain pen is ready for writing, or for putting in the front row of your collection. The cap crack is repairable

Oh, almost forgot - overall length  capped is just over 5 1/4 inches and a long 6 1/2 inches with the cap posted - this is a long pen! The cap posts easily and securely but feels a bit long with the cap posted. I seldom post caps unless it is a very short pen. I would classify this as a very slender pen in girth, as that was what it was designed to be.

This is a very nice example of a Waterman\'s early BCHR fountain pen. This pen would make a really great daily writer or a nice addition to your collection. I hope I look this good when I hit 97!
