ca1890 FORT YATES / STANDING ROCK SIOUX INDIAN AGENCY CABINET CARD PHOTO #2:
$133.50

Exceptionally rare and original, ca1890 Cabinet Card Photograph of an Indian Wars period United States Army Field Camp known as Camp Ruger where soldiers from Fort Yates (the site of the Standing Rock Agency on the Sioux Indian Reservation taken at the time of the Ghost Dance craze and before the “Battle” of Wounded Knee, South Dakota) were posted at various times. At this time soldiers from the 12th Infantry and the 8th Cavalry were stationed at Fort Yates and would also have been posted to Camp Ruger.

This fascinating, Bird\'s-Eye View of the Standing Rock Agency / U.S. Army Field Camp measures approx. 7 3/4\" by 4 1/2\" and is mounted on its original, photographer\'s card mount (overall size of mount is approx. 8 1/2\" by 5 1/4\"). The Photograph is a \"bird\'s-eye-view\" depicting Camp Ruger located north of Fort Yates. The compact Field Camp is seen at some distance with the Cannonball River visible in the foreground - in fact, Camp Ruger was surrounded on 3 sides by the river and the formation of the field tents give wonderful insight into the layout of a field camp in the West during the late Indian Wars period. The Photo is identified with inkstamp text on the mount that reads \"Camp Ruger, Dak.\"

Fort Yates was established December 23, 1874 and located on the banks of the Missouri River. It was about 10 miles from the South Dakota line and established as headquarters for the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Agency. George Yates, for whom the fort was named, was captain of the 7th US Cavalry and was killed June 25, 1876 in the Battle of Little Big Horn. At the time this photograph was taken Fort Yates was the home of the 12th United States Infantry and the 8th United States Cavalry.

This exceptionally rare oversized Cabinet card Photo came to us with a number of other Images on identical card mounts and all depicting scenes at the Standing Rock Agency in 1889-1890 - the period when tensions were building between whites and the Sioux of the Standing Rock and Pine Ridge Agencies over the Ghost Dance Religion and during which time the great Sioux War Chief Sitting Bull was being held captive at Standing Rock. These tensions eventually resulted in the infamous Wounded Knee Massacre where at least 150 Lakota men, women and children from both Standing Rock and Pine Ridge were killed and 50 wounded. While the photographer of these Views is not identified, we believe that they may have been taken by the famous western photographer William R. Cross.

This very rare and wonderful Native American Indian / Indian Wars / Standing Rock Agency Cabinet Card photo is in very good condition. The Photo itself exhibits good contrast and tonality although it is somewhat light. There is some spotting in the negative and some light, scattered foxing in the area of the sky. The card mount has soiling and light edge wear.

We have been unable to locate any examples of this Image in any Library or Museum Collection nor any other examples that have been offered for sale - we believe that this may be a previously unknown view of Camp Ruger - in fact possibly the ONLY view of the Indian Wars period Field Camp.

A very rare and original, ca1890 Cabinet Card Photograph of Camp Ruger - a United States Army Field Camp associated with Fort Yates, North Dakota - the location of the Lakota Sioux Standing Rock Agency and worthy of a place in even the most advanced Native American Photo or Western Americana Collection!!!
