Exceptionally rare and original, ca1890 Cabinet Card Photograph of a Native American Lakota Sioux Indian Burial Tree near the Standing Rock Agency (Fort Yates, North Dakota).

This fascinating Sioux Indian Photo measures approx. 4 1/2\" by 7 3/4\" and is mounted on its original, photographer\'s card mount (overall size of mount is approx. 5 1/4\" by 8 1/2\"). The Photograph pictures the body of a Lakota Sioux Indian wrapped and bound to a limb stretcher and elevated in the limbs of a tree in the traditional Lakota burial ritual. The Image is identified with a period inscription on the card mount that reads simply \"Indian Burial Tree\".

While this exceptionally rare oversized Cabinet Card Photo is not further identified in any way, it came to us with a number of other Images on identical card mounts and all depicting scenes at the Standing Rock Agency in 1889-1890 - the period when tensions were building between whites and the Sioux of the Standing Rock and Pine Ridge Agencies over the Ghost Dance Religion and during which time the great Sioux War Chief Sitting Bull was being held captive at Standing Rock. These tensions eventually resulted in the infamous Wounded Knee Massacre where at least 150 Lakota men, women and children from both Standing Rock and Pine Ridge were killed and 50 wounded. While the photographer of these Views is not identified, we believe that they may have been taken by the famous western photographer William R. Cross.

Fort Yates was established December 23, 1874 and located on the banks of the Missouri River. It was about 10 miles from the South Dakota line and established as headquarters for the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Agency. George Yates, for whom the fort was named, was captain of the 7th US Cavalry and was killed June 25, 1876 in the Battle of Little Big Horn. At the time this photograph was taken Fort Yates was the home of the 12th United States Infantry and the 8th United States Cavalry.

This very rare and wonderful Native American Lakota Sioux Indian / Indian Wars / Standing Rock Agency Cabinet Card Photo is in very good condition. The Photo itself exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich tonality. There is some light surface soiling and some scattered foxing in the area of the sky. The card mount has soiling and light edge wear.

We have been unable to locate any examples of this Image in any Library or Museum Collection nor any other examples that have been offered for sale - we believe that this may be a previously unknown view of a Sioux Burial Tree at Standing Rock.
