also, please see these REAL PHOTO postcards:REAL PHOTO POSTCARDS INcatherbrownbooks store on SHIPPING - AS USUAL!1910 postmarked Real Photo postcard showing the interior - with family members and, perhaps, staff, of a small restaurant almost certainly owned by William Engelhart of Cullman Alabama and Sellersburg, Indiana. This card shows a postmark date of 1910 but I cannot make out the name of the town in which it was postmarked (see 3rd paragraph in this description).
I have listed elsewhere on vintage photos of the front of his restaurant in Cullman Alabama and of the interior of his candy & sweet shop in Sellersburg, Indiana. The sweet shop (a few years later than the Cullman restaurant) could have had a restaurant area as well. This postcard is addressed to Mrs. William Engelhart in Albertville, Alabama. I do not know if she was the owner\'s wife or daughter-in-law. The owner William Engelhart seems to have moved from Cullman to Sellersburg in 1908 but apparently there was still family in Alabama in 1910 and the owner may have left them in charge of the Cullman business and he - as a seemingly well-to-do merchant - may well have traveled back and forth between Sellersburg and Cullman. (He also owned a leather goods shop in Sellersburg and I have a photo of THAT business interior listed on - subject to prior sale).
I\'m inclined to think that this was the restaurant in Cullman but I can\'t guarantee that. (There is an \"M\" or \"N\" in the postmark city name which would fit for Cullman but which would NOT fit for Sellersburg). Too, the \"look\" here does not seem to quite fit with the known interior view of his sweet & candy shop in Sellersburg. Search my store for Sellersburg and for Cullman and you can see ALL of the Engelhart photos that I\'m be offering - subject to prior sale. (This RPPC is the last Engelhart photo I\'ll be listing).
The message on the postcard - not sure who wrote it - indicates that this photo was taken \"by a man staying here\" and the Cullman restaurant (see its exterior view) WAS connected to a hotel. At first I thought perhaps the photo had been taken earlier but was not mailed until 1910 yet the message here implies that the photo was taken fairly recently.
I apologize for going \"on and on\" but I want possible buyers to know everything possible about this and the other Engelhart items I am offering.
A search of Google turned up a 1902 Cullman obituary of Engelhart\'s youngest child who died at age 13 months in August 1902. Engelhart seems to have moved to Sellersburg Indiana (with his wife) where he opened an extremely popular ice cream parlor and sweet shop - sort of the same business he owned in Alabama. Google has more than a few links to Engelhart\'s Sweet Shop in Sellersburg and one of those links (at the top of Google result page - or very near the top) specifically states that he moved to Indiana from Cullman in 1908.
Feel free to do a deeper search on google for more info. I found that it helped to put quotes \"William Engelhart\" around his name and then to add the city - Cullman or Sellersburg - WITHOUT quote marks.
There were 2 originals of this real photo postcard in a recent estate photo lot I purchased. I have opted to keep one of them for myself because I do not need 2 of them. I\'m not sure why but I kept the unposted and undated one.
Standard postcard size.
I apologize but due to recent machinations by (they frequently like to \"fix\" things that ain\'t \"broken\"), the links shown above may not take you to the specific subject areas shown but will, rather, take you to my entire store where you will now have to do your own searches for those very specific locations and subjects :-{
There is a short, noticeable crease across the face of the 2nd youngest child here and it does break the emulsion a bit; address side of card shows some modest soiling. Near VG and a very sharp image otherwise VG........... the slip of purple paper is laid onto the scanner bed to help protect the uniqueness of this item. It is NOT attached to the photo and hides no faults that the viewer cannot otherwise fine print ... [sigh] ... but please read :-)
