Greetings. You are offerding on an original CANNON comic strip artby comic book and science fiction art legend WALLACE “Wally” WOOD.

Description: This is NOT a copy or stat or proof. This is the original art, drawn (pen and ink, white-out and zip-a-tone) by Wally Wood. Wood’s wonderful technique is on rare display with this great piece. The artwork area measures approximately 21.5” tallby 16.625” wide. The art is unsigned and undated. This is strip number C118 and was published in 1973 as per the copyrignt indicia.

This gorgeous stripis pure Woody in every detail with tough guys, a beautifulwoman, a kidnapping by enemy agents and Cannon trying to get out of the chief\'s (Max Schneider) doghouse (hence his being assigned towiretap duty). His plan is to chasethe chief\'ssultry daughter, Wendy and force the chief to send him out in the field.John Cannon was a secret agent and assassin (ala James Bond, but nastier) who had been captured by the enemy and brain-washed. Once he returned to the U.S., he was re-programmed, recovering his mental and physical abilities, but left virtually emotionless. Hisfought terrorists and enemies here and abroad and always seemed to end upin the company of a voluptuous(and often scantily clad) woman. His long time sweetheart, Elena, pined over him for years and, if memory serves, ended up marrying him. Have no fear for as this sequence wraps up withCannonrescuingWendy from the kidnappers, killing five enemy agents in the process. The chief, once he realizes that Wendy is sweet onhim, sends Cannon to the Middle East on a secret mission. Everyone ends up getting what they want, except perhapsWendy.

As an fascinating side note to this strip,Woody drew himself in as the character \"Finn\" (the cigarette smoking guy speaking with Cannon in the top section of the strip).

This strip is reproduced on pages 236 and 237 of Cannon by Wallace Wood (Fantagraphics Books 2014).

Publication: This stripwas originally published inOverseas Weekly. This was the U.S. military\'s weekly newspaper (which also featuredWally’s Sally Forth comic strip) provided to military personnel serving overseas.Cannon ran in weekly installments from 1970until 1973.

ARTIST INFORMATION

Wallace “Wally” Wood (aka “Woody”; 1927-1981) is widely regarded as one of the greatest comic book artists ever, especially in the genres of war, crime, science fiction, superhero, and humor. Wood blended the disparate cartooning influences of Hal Foster, Alex Raymond, Milton Caniff, and Will Eisner into a detail-laden style uniquely his own. After beginning his career as an assistant to Will Eisner and George Wunder, and drawing some romance comic stories for Fox, Wood came into his own at EC and Avon, working primarily on science fiction stories. He also produced an impressive body of uproarious work for Harvey Kurtzman’s EC humor title, Mad. During the Silver Age Wood drew (and re-designed the costume and look of) Daredevil for Marvel, and created the super-hero and espionage comic books, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agent, (and related titles) for Tower.

In the late 1960s, Wood launched the important independent magazine, witzend. Other renowned projects in his portfolio include his fantasy stories for Warren Publishing, hissyndicated strips for the military, Sally Forth and Cannon, and his graphic novel trilogy the Wizard King.

Perhaps his most hilariously infamous satire was hisDisneyparody poster and his WSF portfolio which featured a Star Wars spoof.Wood collaborated with many talented assistants over his career including Harry Harrison, Joe Orlando, Dan Adkins, Ralph Reese, Wayne Howard, Larry Hama, Paul Kirchner, Mike Zeck, Howard Chaykin and many others.

Condition: This art is in very good to excellent condition. The cityscape panel isa stat. The title is also a stat. The piece includes extensive use of zip-a-tone shading andwhite out touch ups throughout.Creases to margins and to lower right corner of top section. The art is in two sections (title andtop twotiers are on one section; the bottom tier on another).Slight browning from aging of Zip-a-tone glue. Photo notes:The flash glare on the Zip-a-tone has washed out the head shot of Cannon in the center of the bottom section. The yellowcover up strips (2 panels in bottom section)are not on the original art.

This is a wonderful opportunity for the Wally Wood fan, comic book, strip or illustration art collector, or anyone who appreciates a legendary talent, to acquire a great piece of art. A published Wally Wood cartoonof this quality would be the centerpiece of any Woodcollection. Don’t let this one pass you by!
