Description

Handsome late 19th to early 20th century example of the work of Bernardo Hay (1864-1931)c signed and titled in the artists hand, “Capri.” Son of the English artists Jane Benham Hay (1829-1904) and Italian painter Francesco Saverio Altamura (1822-1897) who was a key member of the Macchiaioli, pre-impresionist movement. It is noted that Hay studied with both of his parents. Bernardo Hay can be found listed both as a British artist as well as an Italian artist. He exhibited works as early as 1875 and participated in the Salvator Rosa Exhibition at Naples in 1880 and then in 1883 at the Milan Art Exhibition continuing to exhibit into the 1890s. He traveled for some time to Belgium and spent time in Venice before settling in Capri where he became know for his extensive views of the surrounds as well as many depictions of Naples.

This exquisite little oil on wood panel painting shows the roadway to the light house on the Island of Capri with the Faraglioni in the distance. It is in excellent condition with original frame which displays the foil label on the verso of the framer Korner & Wood of Cleveland, Ohio. It measures 11 3/4 x 6 5/8 inches without frame. Frame outside measurements are 16 1/4 x 11 inches.
