Carborundum Sensen-Wetzstein Scythe Whet Stone 1900\'s NOS ? Dutch packaging Cool:
$26.00

Greetings antique / vintage sharpening stone collectors ! !For your consideration is a very nice Carborundum sharpening stone with the packaging worded in German.
I am not sure if it was packaged for export or if it was to designed acclimate the demographic of the Niagara area at the time.
sensen-wetzstein translates roughly to scythe whet stone, eingeragenes warenzeichen to registered trademark.
My guess is ..circa early 1900\'s.
The stone measures approximately 9\'\' long by 1 1/4\'\' by 1/2\'\' thick.
The packaging is in excellent condition with minor wear and the stone has obviously never been used.
Here is some information on how Carborundum came to be :
In a small Pennsylvania town in 1890, the inventor Edward Goodrich Acheson carried out a series of experiments.
He tried to heat carbon so intensely that it would result in diamond. It didn\'t work.
So Acheson began mixing clay with carbon and electrically fusing it. The result was a product with shiny specks that were hard enough to scratch glass. This was silicon caroffere. Also known as carborundum.
The next year Acheson formed his company in Monongehela, PA and named it Carborundum.
He moved the company to Niagara Falls, NY, USAin 1895.
