This is an original Nelvana hand-painted animation cel. It was used to produce animation at Nelvana and no reproductions or copies of this cel are in existence.In traditional animation,hundreds of individual painted cels like this one were used to create a single minute of story.This cel began as a pencil drawing, created byan animator. After the drawing was transferred to acetate (clear plastic film), a painter filled in the color from behind. Then stacked with other cels (with other characters and objects) and a painted background, it was filmed on an upright camera. Each individual image was layered in this fashion, with more than 15,000 frames in a half-hour television show.Today, the art of cel painting has been virtually lost. Digital technology has replaced the paintbrush, and most animation is colored by computer, not bypainters.This cel is a unique work of art.
