Carlos Raquel Rivera, (Yauco, P.R., 1923 - San Juan, P.R., 1999)

Painter and graphic artist. He began his art studies at the Edna Coll Art Academy under the guidance of Hurtado de Mendoza, Ángel Botello, Tomás Fuentes, Nino Sparaccino, and Federico Enjuto. In 1950 he moved to New York, where he studied with Reginald Marsh and John Corbino at the New York League of Art Students. Upon his return to Puerto Rico, he worked in Juan Rosado’s poster workshop in Puerta de Tierra, along with Rafael Tufiño and Antonio Maldonado. He also participated in the founding of the Center for Puerto Rican Art. In 1954 he joined the Community Education Division’s graphic arts workshop as an illustrator, designer, and poster artist. He is one of the great maestros of the Fifties Generation. In 1958, he received the Prize of Nations at the Mexico Biennial of Painting and Engraving. Satire and social and political critique in a magical Environment are distinguishing elements of his work. Early in his career, his graphics work presented directly Puerto Rican national and cultural identity as well as the artist’s political views. The content of his later paintings was more universal, with images of fantasy and existential anguish, although the social statements of his first period are equally applicable.
