~ Cased Model Of HMS Orion, Part of Lord Nelsons Fleet At Trafalgar ~HMS Orion was a third rate ship of the line who in her many years of service was part of Lord Nelsons fleet at the Battle of the Nile and along with Ajax, helped force surrender of the French ship Intrepid at the battle of Trafalgar. This is a great small scale wooden model of HMS Orion in full (paper) sail with rigging. It is presented as a water level model with a hand painted, presumably plaster sea.The model is displayed within a custom made glazed oak case with a copper name plate to one end reading \'HMS Orion 1785\'.The case has a cork underside.Given the style of the case we would date the model to the mid 20th century.~ Dimensions ~The case measures inches 11 inches (28cm) long, 4 ¼ inches (11cm) deep and 9 inches (23cm) high. It weighs 1.82Kg.~ Condition ~The model is in wonderful condition as is the case.~ HMS Orion ~HMS Orion was a 74-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, launched at Deptford on 1 June 1787 to the design of the Canada-class, by William Bately. She took part in all the major actions of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars under a series of distinguished captains. In 1794 she fought at the Glorious First of June under Captain John Thomas Duckworth. In early 1797 she was sent to join the Mediterranean Fleet and distinguished herself at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent on 14 February. She then took part in the blockade of Cadiz from March 1797 to April 1798, when she was sent into the Mediterranean as part of a small squadron under the command of Rear-Admiral Horatio Nelson. In August, Nelson finally caught up with the French fleet.Seven years later in October 1805, now under Captain Edward Codrington, she took part in the Battle of Trafalgar where, with Ajax, she forced the surrender of the French 74-gun ship Intrépide. For further details and condition see pictures
