Very unusual outdoor CDV photo of the First Rhode IslandCavalry on dress parade on the plains of Manassas in 1862.

This card came from the estate of Ephraim E. Brown of the 64thNY and bears old ink inscriptions in his hand on the front and back noting hisservice record and identifying the unit pictured as his old regiment.Unfortunately, Brown annotated the photo when elderly and his memory failedhim: the photo actually shows the First Rhode Island Cavalry on dismounteddress parade in 1862.

The image with its correct identification can be found inthe Mass Mollus collection of photographs available through the US Army Historyand Education Center at Carlisle Barracks: Volume 97, page 4977. I show the card front and back, and a vignetted portion of the image at USAHEC to show it is the same.

The image is quite nice with a lot of detail. The regimentalband appears at left; the officers stand in front of the companies, all standat parade rest, with hands on saber hilts. A Flag flies in the background on aFlagpole, tents and bystanders are visible in the background. Brown’sannotation is in the skyline and does not affect the image.

The regiment mustered into US service in March, 1862, andwas sometimes known as the First New England Cavalry. It saw service in theShenandoah and in Virginia with the Army of the Potomac until finally musteredout in August, 1865. Further information on the outfit can be readily accessedon the web.

An interesting photograph, a good unit, and an interestingcommentary on the limits of memory.
