Enslaved Africans brought many skills and handicrafts with them, the Gullah or Geechee of the southern US are descendants of these slaves and the knowledge of basket making has been passed on generation after generation. Found only around Mt Pleasant & Charleston SC and Savannah GA these unique coiled baskets are still being made. Using materials harvested by hand including rushes, grasses, pine needles and palmetto fronds these baskets are made by tightly coiling material and wrapping it with palmetto, the coils are joined to form the body and handle of a basket. The tighter and smaller the coils the higher quality the basket as it takes more time and skill to do it that way.This Gullah basket was purchased in Charleston SC 10+ years ago, a cylinder measuring 11\" x 8.5\" it makes a good waste paper receptacle. The sides are undulating and it is fine condition with a few minor areas where the palmetto wrapping has come loose. But no damage. These are expensive baskets and getting harder to find.
