Here on offer is a charming antique French boudoirdoll with silk face and original dress and headdress.

Boudoir or bed dolls have long limbs and faces withkohl rimmed eyes and bee stung lips. Composition was the most popular mediumfor the face, this was a mix of sawdust, rags, flour, wood pulp bound togetherwith glue and moulded to shape, but this easily deteriorated. This doll has asilk face and hair. The stitching at the base of her neck is missing a fewstitches and needs a minor repair. Her eyelashes have been made from camel hair,but have almost vanished and have fractured the cloth around her eyes, but shestill displays well. She has lower arms and legs made from bisque. Her body ismade from a stuffed fabric, probably cotton and is stuffed with straw.

The silky pink fabric of her dress is in goodcondition, it is edged with a creamy trim. The generous skirt is ankle length,flaring from the hip. Beneath her dress she haspleated and layered black petticoat and cream lace edged bloomers. Sheretains her flower trimmed headdress around her beautifully coiffured hair.

These dolls were not intended as playthings, butfor adults to display reclining against pillows and cushions. They could bepurchased in all manner of stores and catalogues, some poor quality ones couldbe gained as prizes at the carnival. Kits were even available in the 1930s thatwould contain the fabrics and accessories, ‘Household Arts by Alice Brooks’used the by line: ‘Let a boudoir doll add glamour to your room’. Thesebeautiful dolls were at their most popular from 1915 to the early 1940s. Thebest came from France, but they were also made in England, Italy and America

This doll is offered in good antique condition, shemeasures about 78cm in height.
