You are offerding on a charming, vintage Reuge music box that plays four tunes on a 50-note movement: Arrivederci Roma, Torna a Surriento, Santa Lucia and O Sole Mio. This plays quite nicely; when fully wound, it will play for several minutes straight! If you\'ve never heard a 50-note movement, be prepared for much more richness and variety in tone than in your typical small musical movement.
I have uploaded a video of all four tunes. Search Youtube for 9282014-01 and it should pop right up! You\'ll notice that there is a slight mechanical whirring sound...I think that this is more noticeable in the video than in person, but it is present. (The other whirring sound that occurs occasionally is my camera focusing.)The movement is in great condition - very clean and shiny. I should note that when I received this box, the stop wire (the dull gray wire visible in the back of the box) had a powdery residue on it, which I cleaned off.
The case is a different story - I\'m not sure whether it got wet, or was stored in too hot/too cold conditions, but the finish is quite crackled. The good news is that the wood itself is very solid - it is not at all warped, moldy or musty. Just the finish is messed up, primarily on the back right corner, where some inlay also appears to be missing. I will leave it up to the buyer to determine whether to refinish the exterior of the box. Personally, I think it would be fine to display as-is, especially if you like a box with a little character. :)
There are also a few small paint speckles on top of the domed lid.
The tune card under the lid is not attached, just wedged in place. There is another tune card on the bottom of the box; this one has a tiny bit of writing on it.
Overall, this is a very high-quality box with a bit of vintage charm to it, and it\'s just waiting for a new, loving home!Keep your eye on my other sales...I have more music boxes and movements to list over the next couple weeks - although I admit that this is one of the best treasures in my collection right now. :)
