This rather extraordinary pair of antique slipper shoes are in excellent condition for age.

Beautifully worked canvas wool embroidery with petit point detail, the slippers have a pair of horses to each shoe top!

I have never seen anything like them before and would think they are late Victorian, but this is guesswork. They are certainly post-1850's as they have a right and left foot, which did not exist up to the mid 19th Century.

The horses are amazingly life-like and have so much detail, with reins and rosettes, all ready to go riding! We have one chestnut and one grey, with their noses almost nuzzling!

The main wool work embroidery is a soft, dark purple and the insides are tan.

Although magazines from the early 19th Century included patterns for the lady at home to embroider, this pair is professionally made. No doubt about this in my mind!

I would think they are quite rare.

The slippers have a formal 0.5" stacked heel and leather soles, in used but very good condition. Markings on the soles are shown in the photo's but please note it was not until the Edwardian era that shoes began to be standardised for size.

The upper shoe edges are navy velvet, with a little rubbing but completely sound.

The inner lining is kid leather, again all good.

The inner soles are again kid leather I think, and applied on top of perhaps an inter lining slightly wooly in appearance, probably for comfort. The inner soles have a little wear and curling to the edge. See photo's.

From toe to heel back they measure approx 10.25" inside. The widest width is 3.5".

Once bought they are all yours but I would be disappointed if they are bought for wearing. They are historic and if not going to an embroidery specialist, I can see them beautifully displayed by a Victorian fireplace, all ready for the Victorian gentleman to come home for tea!

On 25-Apr-14 at 15:43:05 BST, seller added the following information:

Dear Melanie,
I have just looked at the two links/manufacturers you named and can see they make similar shoes, but I couldn\'t find any with such tiny petit point embroidery, or indeed horses! As I have said in the description, I had never seen anything like them before and my era was pure guesswork.
My thoughts as to them being antique is the markings on the base of the shoes. I have seen this type of marking many times in the late 19th and early 20th Century to the base of shoes. From the latter part of the 19th Century, sizes of shoes were shown on the soles of shoes, but these could not be relied on from one maker to another. It was in the early 20th Century that sizes meant more or less the same thing across the country, with improved mass manufacture, as far as I have read. [See my book references].
These shoes also came with another pair and a single. All embroidered and 19th Century for sure -earlier than these. So I may have made a presumption that these are from an antique shoe collector.
I do take my listings very seriously and your questions have raised concern in my mind - so I will add a note to the base of the listings [sadly, will not allow changes to the text inside the listing once offers have been placed.] But I think I have been quite fair in stating that my dating is pure guesswork.
Thank you so much for your comments. Please do not offer if you have the slightest doubt. I will add this conversation to the Question & Answer section at the foot of the listing.
Best wishes, Ann

PLEASE NOTE THAT I HAVE RECEIVED A MESSAGE TO QUESTION THAT THESE SHOES ARE VICTORIAN. MY REPLY IS SHOWN ABOVE. AS STATED IN THE DESCRIPTION, MY DATING WAS PURELY GUESSWORK AS I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE THEM BEFORE! PLEASE ONLY offer IF YOU ARE HAPPY ABOUT THIS. THE CUSTOMER SUGGESTED THAT THE HORSES BRIDLE AND DECORATIONS MAY GIVE CLUES TO THE AGE OF THE SHOES. WORTH A TRY1
