Original Wisconsin Secretary of State\'s check dated August 25, 1866 and signed by Thomas S. Allen (1825-1905) who was brevetted Brigadier General for his services during the Civil War. He served with the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry in 1861 and 1862, becoming wounded at Antietam. He was appointed Colonel of the 5th Wisconsin Infantry in early 1863 and led that regiment at Fredericksburg, Rappahannock Station, and Petersburg. He was mustered out in late 1864, was brevetted Brigadier General in 1865 and in 1866 was elected Secretary of State of Wisconsin. General Allen signs this check in the amount of $502.28 for the expenses of a commissioner to revise assessment laws. Size is about 3 1/2\" x 7 3/4\". $3 shipping.
