From the estate of JACKSON COLVARD of Big Cove on the EasterN CHEROKEE QUALLA INDIAN RESERVATION in Cherokee, NC---related to JACK JACKSON & TWO CHEROKEE CHIEFS.  I purchased this image in 2001along with at least a dozen photographs of the Cherokee family including tintypes, cabinet cards & silver prints of WWI Cherokee soldiers, etc.

Probably post Civil War---A CHEROKEE SOLDIER (as evidenced by his ammo or cartridge belt----Eastern Native Americans didn\'t wear cartridge belts-- and his slouch hat & coat)-----probably a former CONFEDERATE---POSES WITH HIS WIFE IN HER TRADITIONAL 1860S-70s CHEROKEE ATTIRE.

The EasterN BAND OF CHEROKEES fought with the CONFEDERACY in the Civil War under the leadership of a white man COL. WILLIAM H. THOMAS who formed in 1862 the 69TH NORTH CAROLINA REGIMENT and who had been born on the QUALLA RESERVATION and gained the deep respect of the Cherokees when he saved their land following the 1838 TRAIL OF TEARS, even becoming their FIRST WHITE CHIEF.  The Regiment became known as \"THOMAS\' LEGION OF INDIANS AND HIGHLANDERS\" and distinguished itself in battles in N.C. & Tenn. and even fought in the SHENANDOAH VALLEY CAMPAIGN under CONFEDERATE GENERAL JUBAL EARLY---reaching the outskirts of D.C.. within view of the incomplete construction of the CAPITAL BUILDING.

THIS IMAGE HAS BEEN IMMORTALIZED IN MY NOVEL ARMACHAIN (2008 iUniverse, 2014 DonnaInk Publ.)AND WAS THE PRIMARY STIMULUS FOR MY WRITING IT.  The book tells the story of the Eastern Cherokees of Thomas\' Legion, their loves, exploits, battles, & adventures during the Civil War---and is protected by copyright from any form of reproduction.

FYI:  I spent 2 years in the U.S. Public Health Service in Cherokee, NC.  The people became endeared to me
