Chinese Yuan or Early Ming Silk Lampas Damask Textile Fragment with Lobed Roundels arrangedin staggered rows and eachenclosing a fantastic animals amidst clouds, the field with peony flowers,leavesand scrolling tendrils. arranged in staggered rows.Two halves of two roundels survive, both with the back half ofthe same bucking quadruped (a kylin?)with a cloud tail together with other designs including a disc and a stylized cloud/vegetable form The repeats measure c.15 x 15cm. and the roundel height c. 13.5cm.Weave: twill/tabby lampas, the ground warp-faced 3\\1 twill. One end binding warp to every 4 ends main warp, one pickpattern weft with each pick ground weft. At least one selvedge. Main warp: mid brown silk, S-twisted, single, c.50 endsper cm. Binding warp: silk, lighter? than main warp yarn, fine threads with very little twist (slight S?, c.12 ends per cm.Main weft: silk without twist, color as main warp. Pattern weft: silk without twist, only one lat, apparently only onecolour, now greenish golden. Together c. passes 22 per cm.
