VINTAGE ERZGEBIRGE Christmas PYRAMID SEIFFEN CAROLERS SHAVED WOOD TREE GERMANY
Between the Czech border and Chemnitz Dresden is the mountanous region of the Erzgebirge which means "ORE MOUNTAIN" because of its rich silver discovered in 1170. This area was know as the "MIRIQUIDI" which is the Latin for "DARK FOREST" because of the dense forest that covered the area.
After the silver rush, tin was discovered in 1436 which created more settlements in the area. In the 19th Century all the mines started to dwindle and this created an urge to find new occupations. Being very ingenious and skilled in wood crafting specially in toy making in order to provide for their families.
Several companies have their headquarters in this beautiful region, Steinbach, Ulbricht, Sarco, KWO, Kunstgewerbe Frieder & Andre Uhling, Richard Glaesser, Mueller Kleinkunst Seiffener Volkskunst, etc.
A pyramid is a kind of carousel with motifs. The spinning motion is traditionally achieved with the help of candles whyose rising heat spins a propeller above.
This adorable vintage one tier pyramid is beautifully hand carved. It stands about 10" tall. There are five carolers. Four have little books in their hands the fifth one is holding a star. The tree in the center is very typical of the area. It is made out one piece of wood that is carefully shaved to pretend it is the branches of a Christmas tree. The candle bowls are brass. Inside them there is still the wax to hold the candles in place. The platform spins freely. It will arrive with 8 new red candles.
On the base there is the Seiffer hallmark: Echte Erzeb Handarbeit Seiffen Made in Germany.
I have tried to describethis adorable Vintage Erzgebirge Seiffer Pyramid as well as possible.
I do not see any repairs or chips. I have added 8 red candles.
