S on any of this great, historical Americana!Civil War-time Soldier Autograph Letter SIGNED. 4p., 5 x 8" letter from a Jno. C. B. Bonen, addressed from Harpers Ferry, Heff Cty, VA, dated May 3, 1861. Letter regards the shape of the country at the start of the war, stating "…when the cloud of darkness did not loom up over our much beloved country when everything seemed to pour hot fumes into the heart of all nation but oh how different now but may the wrath of man be turned into the glory of God…" Then mentioning a Culpepper's Company, "…The company was stationing Harpers Ferry but since have been moved to a little place close to Callice Bolisor which is much more pleasant. Our company is 55 or so strong all in fine health and sprits except Bert who has the measles. There are said to be between 4000 or 5000 boots station at this place all in fine health. I believe the boys will all fight if ness.. I do not know how long we shall remain here as I understand this is considered a very important post one which will be likely first attack but if we remain and everything keeps quite I want to come home…"Original creasing with minor foxing and bleeding of standing through letter. as shown, overall fine condition. .
