The United States Sanitary Commission was a privaterelief agency created by federal legislation on June 18, 1861, to support sickand wounded soldiers of the U.S. Army during the American Civil War. Itoperated across the North, raised an estimated $25 million in Civil War erarevenue and in-kind contributions to support the cause, and enlisted thousandsof volunteers.
The Western Sanitary Commission was a private agencybased in St. Louis that was a rival of the larger U.S. Sanitary Commission. Itoperated in the west during the American Civil War to help the U.S. Army dealwith sick and wounded soldiers mostly confined to the campaigns of the Western Theater.It was a duplicate service, but was established for political reasons and thefear of losing Missouri.
The United States Christian Commission (USCC) was anorganization that furnished supplies, medical services, and religious literatureto Union troops during the American Civil War. It combined religious supportwith social services and recreational activities. It supplied Protestantchaplains and social workers and collaborated with the U.S. Sanitary Commissionin providing medical services.
Bible and Tract Societies furnished pamphlets and religiousbooklets to soldiers and sailors.
