Partial Transcript

“having written to you and Jule only a day or two previous I thought it best to put off answering it until after Thanksgiving, that I might give you a description of the Festivities of the Occassion. Enclosed herewith is you will receive the Program for the day and evening, that is, the Public entertainments....There were many of the officers present from other Regiments at Hilton Head and from their conduct on that day and evening, I should judge that many of them entertain no respect for their wives, mothers, & sisters they have left at home, and then to think that we who respect ourselves have to render homage to such beings as our Superior Officers. And what is more, our Country’s life is, as it were, in such hands. But thank God there were some Noble exceptions among the Officers of the 48th....

As for myself, I enjoyed myself on Thanksgiving day very much...I will give you our bill of fare.. Roast Beef Chicken Pot Pie...Potatoes (mashed) Sweet Potatoes (Boiled) Tomatoes (Stewed) Turnips (Mashed)...Apple Pie Almonds Blackberry Jam Raising Pudding Bread Pudding Apples...

You misjudge me Minnie, when you say I am no friend to Genl McClellan. I think him a good General and a Patriot, though not enough of a go ahead. He is the best engineer probably in the United States, but for offensive operation, too slow entirely....I think you will find that Genl Burnside is the man...”
