original Civil War Confederate letterdated, In Camp Near Atlanta July 17/64. Some of the writing is hard to read I translated the best I could. The letter reads:

My Dear Mary

On my arrival here yesterday I found a letter from you.............I have been assigned to duty as Captain so I feel authorized to place the other bar on my collar. The enemy are reported crossing the river this morning in large force every thing is in readiness for a move or a fight one I cant exactly tell which. I found the citizens are preparing to leave for forty miles below Atlanta. The enemy came near getting between me and Atlanta but they have been met by Armstrongs Command and driven back across the river. The impression is that Gen. Johnson will give them a fight before he leaves has wear and stain you have any questions feel free to ask. Thank you for looking. Please note I list new items every week.
