Condition: Excellent (see photos)

Details: This is truly a piece of civil war history. This letter is from C.S. Navy Lieutinant S.W. Corbin (prisoner #63). Lt. Corbin taught at VMI after the war and later became a Virginia State Senator. We did our best to transcribe the letter but there is some words we could not make out.

Here is how the letter reads;
\" Fort Delaware, Division 29
Officers Prison, Feb\'ry 19th 1865

My Dear Madame,

Your most welcome & charming letter of the 11th unit: came safe last night & I am a thousand times obliged to you for it. I received a few days ago a kind message from Mrs. Pennington (formerly Miss Emily Harper) of Baltimore - if you know her, please give my very kindest regards to her. I can\'t imagine why she should have inquired about me; as I do not remember ever to have met her,- & very stupidly acknowledged the same, to H: Murray the officer who delivered the inquiry; before I knew what he came to see me about. Won\'t it be terrible for me, if I ever did know her & to have forgotten her so completely? I have written to my beloved, respected, & esteemed friend, & relative, P.T. Lomax Esqr: but he has evidently been too busy to answer my letters; - possibly, he may never have received it. I have a very kind letter from Rev: A.A. Hudge & his father Rev: Chas: Hodge of Princeton to whom I wrote asking about young Lomax of the family. I sent the young gent my love & a request that he would write through the Rev. C.Hodge but of course he has no time under the circumstances to neglect his studies in writing to a rebel. Did I tell you that Jack has the parole of the island to deliver blankets ___ from the cotton fund? We are all in good hope of an early exchange, as the ice is floating from the river very rapidly.
