This dress was originally made as a wrapper that buttoned all the way up the center front with blue crochet ball buttons. Five of the six still function buttons remain. The bold paisley center panel preprinted and matching bands on both sides of the front of the bodice and around the bottom of the pagoda sleeves were sewn on. The latter bands are edged on each side with brown or blue fancy edged embroidered ribbons. The skirt was later sewn up to 10 inches from the waist. The double row drawstring casing at the back of the waist to adjust the waist during pregnancy is still in place.
The back half of the skirt is tightly gauged, but the front is now knife pleated and the bodice has tucks instead of darts with coordinating blue fabric pieced into the waist area at the center front, indicating the front was altered, probably from a full-length front panel maternity wrapper to a fitted waist dress. It is lined in a variety of different silk fabrics.
The piping around the neck is missing and there is a tear in the dress fabric at the back of the neck and another tear at the top right neck opening and a so-so darned mend near the left front underarm, etc. The bodice lining is shredding with a few horizontal splits in the skirt lining. There is also a neat period mend in the skirt lining. (See photos)
