Jean Reginald Stebbins (1836-1898) Civil Warera NY Journalist, son of William Burrell and Elvira S. (Griswold) Stelibins.was born August 24. 1836. in Marshall. Oneida Countv, New York. His parentsremoving to Salisbury, New York, he there passed the days of his boyhood, andreceived an excellent academic education at the Fairfield Collegiate Institute. He afterward taught school, and in 1854 removed to Little Falls and entered thelaw office of Hon. George A. Hardin as a law student, being admitted to the barin 1860.

Soonafter his admission to the bar and while serving as Clerk for Judge Hardin, hepurchased from the heirs of Daniel Ayres, in 1861, \"The Journal.\" andbecame a member of the profession which he afterward honored and adorned.

In 1864,Stebbins purchased \"The Courier\" from Allen W. Eaton and consolidatedit with \"The Journal,\" the name thereafter being \"The Journaland Courier.\" In September, 1866, he admitted his brother, George G.Stebbins, as a partner, and the business was conducted under the firm name ofJ. R. and G. G. Stebbins. In 1882, I. T.Barney purchased an interest in the paper, and the firm name thereafter wasStebbins & Company.

In 1887,Stebbins was elected President of the Agricultural Insurance Company ofWatertown. New York, one of the strongest insurance companies in the northernpart of the state, but his new position necessitated his withdrawal from thefirm of Stebbins & Company, the dissolution taking place November 1, 1888,and he then removed to Watertown to assume the management of the great businessenterprise of which he had been chosen Chief Executive. With that institutionhe was connected for many years as a stockholder and director and finally asits president, holding the latter position from 1888 until the time of hisdeath, April 25. 1898, at Little Falls, NY.

AsPresident of the Agricultural Insurance Company he exhibited remarkable giftsof business sagacity in opening up new fields, putting advanced ideas intooperation, and thus making his term of chief officer of the company such thatits interests materially advanced under his leadership, at the same timeholding the regard and esteem of all his associates. As a journalist, Mr. Stebbins was well equipped for the position he adorned, being a bright, ready and forceful writer. He understood what the true missionof a newspaper should be, what field it should cover, and its true relation tothe public. As a business man he possessed all the essential qualities of headand heart for a leader of men in great enterprises.

As acitizen he was a man beloved by all who had the pleasure of coming in contactwith him, was ever ready to support all measures for the betterment of society, and was liberal and kind to the unfortunate and possessed that Christian spiritwhich is always ready to do good. As a husband and father he was everthoughtful, true, loving and considerate of the dear ones of his heart, a truelover of his home and its surroundings.

Stebbinswas a member of the First Presbyterian church, also of the Young Men\'sChristian Association of Watertown, a trustee of the Black River Institute, anda member of the Union League of Watertown. He gave his political support to theRepublican Party, and was a strong advocate of its principles.
