Confederate capital during the Civil war, Richmond, Virginia was about to fall to Union forces. After receiving the news, Confederate president Jefferson Davis abandoned the area, but not before setting fire to the city. Among the ruins – were insulators used for communication lines. While hundreds were badly melted or broken, several, like the “Confederate Egg” survived.

A rare find from Richmond, VA. This telegraph wire glass insulator is sometimes called a \"Confederate Thread-less Egg\". It does not have any threads interior and was placed on top of poles and held together with tar and the like. It is also unmarked - no name or numbers.
Measurements: 4 3/8 inches tall. Top width is 2 inches in diameter. Middle width is 3 inches in diameter. Bottom width is 3 inches in diameter.
There are surface cracks throughout insulator. No chips, however thin line cracks.
